Dick had many ideas to overcome traffic problems

The suggestion that Meneage Street, Helston, should be pedestrianised is nothing new and Councillor Niall Devenish should not be given a pat on the back for making it.

Mr Devenish may not recall the fact, as he was still at school at the time, but a much mocked former councillor, Dick Curnow, came up with numerous suggestions to overcome the town’s traffic problems 25 to 30 years ago and pedestrianisation of Meneage Street plus changing traffic directions, were among them.

Sadly his ideas did not come to fruition but the late Mr Curnow should have been taken more seriously instead of being mocked by some councillors who should have treated him with more respect.

Many of Dick’s suggestions and ideas for the town were laughed at by many of his then council colleagues. However, as someone who regularly attended council meetings in those days as a young reporter for the Helston Packet, and had considerable respect for Dick, any future changes made to Helston’s traffic system should be attributed to him.
