  • "Dear Christopher Smith, founder of CSA, previous director of CSA and current consultant for CSA Architects.
‘CSA were commissioned by A&P Falmouth, the operating company of Falmouth Docks to design a new cruise terminal reception building, as part of the major planning application, including the creation of an enlarged quay and dredging of the channel’; an excerpt from CSA Architects website.
It appears that those who protest loudest about the absolute need for dredging have the biggest invested financial interests. Or are you a different Christopher Smith?
Are you also the ‘RIBA Chris Smith’ that is represented on the Falmouth Town Forum, which at their latest meeting of 9th May noted ‘Work on the Docks Masterplan had been affected by a recent controversial talk on the dredging proposals at the Poly. This, it was felt, had simply reinforced positions rather than clarified them and had led to a flood of campaigning emails.’ Or am I confusing you with someone else? That flood of campaigning emails must be a real worry for CSA, but nothing a few ‘catchy one-liners’ in the Falmouth Packet can’t sort out I’m sure.
Own Goal? Dr. Miles Hoskin is upfront and clear about his position- an educated local scientist with a concern for the environment; a man who will gain no financial benefit from his views on dredging.
There is a very informative e-petition on the Cornwall Council website you may like to look at. It is a little difficult to navigate the Cornwall Council website, but the petition has been so popular that if you Google ‘Falmouth Masterplan’ it is now the first document that you will read. Much easier!"

Dredging 'own goal' by Dr Hoskin

Excellent letter from Graham Hall last week on the anti-dredging road show by Dr Miles Hoskin, and congratulations to the Packet for highlighting this issue.

And what an own goal by Dr Hoskin! At last we were able to hear his arguments in detail and knock them down like nine pins.

If people oppose dredging because of anti-capitalistic views about private sector heavy industry employers, or because it will encourage the Cruise Liner industry, I wish they would be honest and debate the issue at that level.

Then we can have a proper debate not one based on “What is more important? The temporary welfare of tube worms living in dead maerl while it is temporarily displaced or the long term welfare of the people of this town?”

I grew up in Camborne-Redruth, thriving prosperous communities in those days living on the back of Holmans and South Crofty, The demise of those large employers tore the heart out of those towns, to the extent that large sections of that community now have to get by on subsistence level benefits income. There's a warning there for Falmouth, those that don’t learn from history die from it.

Christopher Smith.
