Disgusted at councillor’s resignation comments

I WRITE to express my disgust concerning Councillor D Merrett's letter regarding resignations. I consider her comments to be both facetious and distasteful, especially when she herself has been suspended on two occasions from council meetings, for her unbecoming behaviour and for unprofessional conduct when carrying out her duties. I consider that both councillors Varney and Eva, when on Falmouth Council, did an excellent job and much progress was made for Falmouth and its people. We all know that Cllr Merrett has a problem with students in Falmouth; she has never made a secret of that fact. I respect her views regarding students, but please remember, however, while problems can be caused at times they spend money in Falmouth.

In my opinion if Cllr Merrett has her way we are taking major steps backwards, after all we are supposedly living in a democracy.

Cllr Merrett and others should look at themselves, instead of attempting to increase their powers. Surely someone should be looking at the reason four councillors, including myself, resigned from the council.

Cllr Merrett should surely work within the system of the council without calling for other county councillors to resign. If she cannot do that, then she is the one who should resign, sooner rather than later.

Ex Cllr Barrie Elliott (UKIP), Boscundle Avenue, Falmouth

I think a councillor should only be allowed to be suspended once, after that they should no longer be able to remain in the job.

I now read the letters ech week and am always amazed at the comments that some Councillors put on and argue like young children. I think next May we should look at the conduct of some of the Councillors and what they have actually done for Falmouth on both Falmouth and Cornwall Council. As said we are supposedly living in a Democracy but am always surprised that what people of Falmouth want is refused at Cornwall Council level. We have a lot to think of at the next elections

Well said Marcella. It's about time this childish bickering stopped, and they got on with the job they are meant to do. If they can't all work together, then they clearly won't be working together for the good of the town!

100% agree Marcella M, about time the people of Falmouth got their elected representatives at County Hall acting for us for a change!

If any good comes out of this debacle maybe it will be next May by a decent turnout and democracy and justice win.

Well let's lay it out on the line for all the armchair politicians shall we, FTC are volunteers they do not recieve paymant or expenses they do more meetings then some of the CC's who are handsomely paid from the tax payers.
So if anyone wants to step in and set themselves up to be a TC or CC the opportunity is there, but one is paid and one is done by people who do have the towns interests at heart and no remuneration.

Why!! are you a councillors wife by any chance Zella!
Try it yourself that's my advice , see how thankless it is for DM she is trying to the job that the elected CC Eva should be doing, cleaning up the ward, she tells the truth that's her downfall.

Poldark, no I am not a councillors wife, I am a widow. I have never been a councillors wife. A councillor can still be honest and tell the truth without managing to get themselves suspended twice. I have never found that telling the truth is a downfall in any walk of life. The code of conduct is there for a reason.

I might be getting on a bit, but I can't remember Dianna Merritt being suspended twice. Can someone tell me what I missed

Zella says...

She breached the code of conduct. Point 3.1 and point 5.

Failing to treat others with respect.

Failing to conduct yourself in a manner which could be reasonably regarded as bringing your office or authority into disrepute.

she get suspended twice for that?

Sorry, point 5 should have read - Not conduct yourself in a manner which could be reasonably regarded as bringing your office or authority into disrepute.

As far as I remember it was end of Oct/start of Nov 2011.
Not sure about the other one mentioned in this letter.

agreed fb, it would be good to know whether Ms Merritt was suspended twice or no... maybe someone's embellishing the facts for their own ends?

wouldn't be the first time!

if she has been suspended twice some one should tell the County Council, I can only find one suspension on their website.

Strange, because both letters that were submitted on this subject, state that she was suspended twice!

Perhaps they meant she was suspended for two different reasons, as opposed to two different occasions. Perhaps the Packet archives would have info on it.

According to Google, Cllr Diana Merrett took a three month suspension in 2010 and a two month suspension in 2011.

I apologize for questioning the accuracy of some of the content in the letter.

if she was suspended how could she attend falmouth council meetings?

Zella says...

As far as I am concerned the issue is that Cllr Merrett was wrong in telling other councillors to resign. It is undemocratic to expect others to resign just because they may hold different opinions to you. It was completely unjustified.

Can I be permitted to say, that I agree, with what The Shell wrote, concerning Barrie Elliott and him returning to the council.
At least you knew where you where with him. He was honest, truthfull and did his best for the people of Falmouth. Did he like a drink, yes he did in moderation, but at no point did this appear to influence him in his decision making. I consider he would be a major asset, should he stand and be elected

Personaly I respect what ex Cllr Elliott and CC Mr Eva, have said. After all neither of these parties commenced this episode, D Merrit did. Which has been said to lack professionalism for a councillor. Mrs Merritt Has quiet a few of good sides, but Non regarding how to conduct herself in a sensible and professioanal manner. Regarding Poldark and his comments, I have it on good authority, that what Mr Elliott said was entirely accurate. In answere to Poldarks query regarding how did any one know, if it affected his judgment because he liked a drink. Can I suggest that Poldark, check his/her records, to see if ex Cllr Elliott, was ever suspended. As I understand it, Mr Elliott, was very professional and open minded. Can I also say that it wasn't Mr Elliott who started all of this, it was Mrs D Merrit. I agree with him when he states, Mrs Merrit should be the one who should resign

I suggest Joshah looks at the minutes of the last meeting Councillor Elliot attended on the Town Council. The 24th May 2010. I din't quite understand what to make of them I think I do now.
