Bullying happens to all ages, especially the elderly IN MAY 2000 a conference heard that bullying, threats and humiliation are the most common forms of ill-treatment experienced by older people.
The conference which was organised by Action on Elder Abuse, following its report earlier that year which had revealed that 40 per cent of incidents of abuse reported by callers, involved insidious psychological or emotional abuse against older people by their families, friends and carers.
I myself have a special interest in the subject of elderly victims of bullying, having had occasion to witness shocking examples in January of this year, which I drew to the attention of Truro Police and social services who appear to have done little or nothing, as the bullying is still continuing.
I have requested that organisations for older people throughout Cornwall in which I happen to have an involvement, including the Carrick over-50's Forum and the Cornwall Senior Citizens' Forum, invite speakers on the subject of the bullying of older people and I am grateful to both organisations for acknowledging and noting my request.
