Skipper was right to be worried about privatisation

The Skipper was right to be very concerned about Cornwall Council’s joint venture and privatisation.

This involves the council’s basic services such as council tax collection, benefits administration, libraries, IT services, care of the elderly and disabled, One Stop Shops and procurement.

They plan to put all these services into a private company in which Cornwall Council would have only a minority share. These front of house services are the ones that effect you in your everyday life.

The justification for this is cost cutting, but as we all know this is really an excuse to cut jobs and distance the council from its responsibility in a time of economic hardship.

This decision was not passed by the full council but by a cabal of politically motivated councillors in the cabinet, and I am certain that this undemocratic ploy will be bad for all the people of Falmouth and Cornwall.

I understand that the sell-off is set to be ratified in October so it can’t be an election issue so as to stitch it all up by the May elections. But we can kick the culpable councillors out of office at the next election.

I think this is the least of our worries. If Candy Atherton gets on the County Council we could got to war with Devon. They have weapons of mass destruction unlike Iraqi
