Falmouth Packet: Packet Skipper

I thought that I would never have to write on this subject again, but the people of Wadebridge decided, in their infinite wisdom, to re-elect Collin Brewer for another term on Cornwall Council.

Now after making what at the time was presented as a heartfelt apology, amid statements reassuring us that he did not think disabled children should be ‘put down’ as they were a little costly for the county, he seems to have walked right back into a media storm.

Just how anyone could hold the view that killing babies on the grounds of cost is beyond me, and if public fury is any gauge, beyond many of you as well.

I read that the police are now involved and that all the political leaders at the council have joined forces in condemnation. And let’s face it, if that bunch are singing off the same hymn sheet you know it is serious.

But the simple truth is that there seems little anyone can do. He cannot be kicked off the council. And while complaints can be raised, all it seems the powers that be can do is ask him to say sorry, and we have been down that road before. We can only hope that he sees sense and resigns, again, before any more damage is done.

On a side note I see the new guide signs are popping up across Falmouth to help visitors find their way around the fair town.

Now no doubt I will get it in the neck for pointing this out, but while no doubt effective and useful, they are also, in my view, garish and shouty.

I know they are not designed for local consumption, as we know where the beaches are already, but I would have preferred a solution that was not quite so loud or brash.

I guess that is the problem with design, one person’s “stylish” is another’s “ugly.” But at least they are bold and bright.

I just ask you to look at the beautiful classic simplicity of some of the old signs, do your own comparison, and consider how the new ones will look in 20 years.
