I am not sure where to begin this week, perhaps the law of unintended consequences is as good a place as any.

No-one needs to be reminded of the palaver over the toilet closures and charging regime by Cornwall Council, the grumpy tourists and doorways smelling of urine all day keep that decision fresh in our minds, and nostrals. But could it have a happy ending?

With the council scraping the barrel for savings, a deal could be struck with Falmouth town council that will see the loos in Falmouth stay open, and even see charges scrapped.

Hopes are high that once the facilities are handed over, maintainence costs can be cut and some assurances about their future can be made.

The ‘tsunami’ of cuts could also speed up the transfer of the municipal buildings in Falmouth, with rumours that Cornwall Council may want to shift the ‘One Stop Shop’ into the building and are just delaying the hand over so they have some wriggle room to make this happen.

Here’s hoping that the town council get their way, it would see many years of work finally see success.

On a side note, this Saturday sees the retirement of a legend of Falmouth waterfront, Pilot David Barnicoat.

He is the longest serving pilot since the formation of the Falmouth and District Pilot Boat Association in 1887, and by the look of him he has been guiding vessels safely into Falmouth since then.

Your pal the Skipper will be raising a glass in tribute to the man.
