There is not much that brings a lump to this old throat these days, but the sight of so many people gathering to pay tribute at Falmouth war memorial was a sight to behold.

The fact that it is 100 years since the wholesale slaughter of WWI no doubt brought many out to take part in the act of remembrance, but it was still wonderful to see.

Even more important in this age of seemingly never ending war is that it remembers not only the sacrifice of so many, and that of the many veterans who fought in other wars to date, but also, as Armistice Day highlights, the end of war.

It celebrates neither conflict nor those that lead us into them, but instead highlights its grim reality. And long may that continue

On a separate note, Public Health England has given crew from the Gypsum Centennial the all clear.

Now when the article was first published, thanks to a tip off from a concerned member of the public, reporters were accused of being irresponsible, stoking fears and more besides.

But seeing the great and the good hitch up their crinolines and get on with ensuring that stringent checks were in place, and having various groups and individuals falling over themsleves to keep the public informed, it was clear that it was very much in the public interest.

Now that may all have happened had we not found out about the ship, but then again, past experience suggests perhaps not.

Regardless, it is good news that they have been given the all clear.
