YOUR pal the Skipper has hit on a new wizard wheeze in case he ever gets into trouble with the police – a polite note.

It would appear this was all that was necessary for our illustrious boys in blue to close the case after a driver sent his car careening over a wall at midnight on Monday.

Upon receiving word that the driver had left a note and would arrange collection, it was ruled ‘not a police matter,’ akin to having broken down by the side of the road.

To my mind, very few breakdowns end with the wheels in the air and the car the wrong side of a large earthen mound. However it got there, be it speed, lack of attention, or even drink, surely it merits a little investigation?

A similar incident happened late last year when a car hurtled through two walls and a shed near Longdowns, and was reported to be filled with blood.

Having located the driver, who had run away, officers simply asked him to go to hospital and left it at that.

Police are doing the best they can in tight times, with no front desk and few beat officers, but potentially deadly crashes must be looked into.

Could our new Police and Crime Commissioner investigate? Or is her mind elsewhere?
