Only a week into the new academic year and the student scare stories have started.

However, it is important to look past the headlines, as there seems to be more than one side to this scuzzy saga. Certain Falmothians appear less than blameless in turning what appears to have started as a bit of youthful fun into what sounds like a near-dystopian rave scene.

One of the residents who reported the party has said she likes students, and indeed the original party-throwers seemed to be overwhelmed by homegrown hoodlums.

Not that they are blameless because of their inexperience – as adults they should be aware of what an open house policy can lead to.

But students are now saying they feel intimidated in our town, and no matter our views on landlords, rents, and drunkenness, that is something that is inexcusable.

I for once agree with our police inspector, it would be deeply disappointing if students became scapegoats for all bad behaviour and social ills.
