Cornwall's Kremlin has come up with what it claims to be "a dynamic new corporate identity" for the county's unitary authority which comes into being next year.

One look at it and it is obvious it is not dynamic and has not taken an expert to come up with: "Cornwall Council" and a bit of Cornish black and gold to add a flash. Dropping the word "County" from the existing name could have been done by a five-year-old let alone a group of highly paid officials we, the taxpayer, are having to pay for.

Just how much this has cost is not clear. We are told it has been done "in-house". In other words a select group at the current county council.

David Whalley, the county's self-appointed leader for the new authority, or so it seems, says it is a positive dynamic logo and brings a modern feel to the best of Cornish tradition.

My bet is it will upset more than a few traditionalists. The Cornish crest has gone although Mr Whalley insists that the traditional crest with miner, fisherman and chough will not be lost - it will still be used by the new council for ceremonial purposes and to represent Cornwall.

What should be questioned is just who has chosen this logo when the new authority does not yet exist? Perhaps those who are eventually elected to the new authority, and let's pray there will be changes to the current bunch, may not like the new logo.

After all it is a fact that the people of Cornwall have had little say in the switch to unitary government whatever the Cornish Kremlin puts out in its statements.

Oh! I forgot, the logo - "Cornwall Council" - we are being told it is "flexible, works well in electronic format on websites and mobile phones and in 3D as well as on uniforms, paper, signage and vehicles."

Further work is now needed to develop clear guidance on the use of the logo and at a meeting at the end of July, detailed proposals, costs and options will be presented for the implementation of the new identity next year... in time for the launch of the Cornwall Council.

No doubt more propaganda material will be flowing from County Hall, oops, the Cornish Kremlin, as the months go by. I will keep you posted.

And while my thoughts are on the county council we can all expect the long-awaited and much criticised county council newspaper to drop through our letterboxes this month. And guess what? It will not include any advertising but be full of propaganda about the county council that is already on their web-site. There can be little doubt this futile exercise will be a total waste of time and effort.

The county council ceases to exist in April next year and if the new authority has any sense it will immediately review the situation.

County council chairman David Whalley claims the publication will include information the electorate say they want. Does he really think the public will believe him?

This newspaper has been a disaster from the time it was conceived. Even an editor who had been appointed more than a year ago at what I may say was a "very good salary" left in disgust months ago.

Just what the county council think they are playing at with taxpayer's money is beyond belief. This is costing money whatever Mr Whalley says and the newspaper will end up being little more than a mouthpiece for those who love power.
