CORNWALL’S Lib Dem MPs have welcomed the announcement on expenses reform that will put the emphasis on transparency and accountability. I bet they have. They smell an election on the horizon and don’t want any more dirty linen washed in public.

All Cornwall’s MPs are Lib-Dems and all say they have argued that the expenses system should be changed and have fought for this to happen.

Why then did they not publish their own claims on-line in the first place in a way which showed us all exactly what we were paying for?

There certainly was a rush to do so after the Daily Telegraph exposures.

Our MPs, and that goes for most of them throughout the country are members of a “club” whether they admit it or not.

The secrecy that has existed at Westminster has enabled all of them, past and present, to do just what they want – and much of it with our money.

Of course there are many good MPs who have not flouted the system and there are others who perhaps made genuine errors of judgement, but without the exposure of the past two or three weeks, I doubt we would be any the wiser as to what goes on in the corridors of power.

Whatever the future holds for our Cornish MPs remains to be seen. They may not have been involved in some of the scandalous pranks their parliamentary colleagues were up to but they can be sure the eyes of Cornwall will be on them in future keeping a very careful watch.
