Full marks to the way Christmas shoppers were greeted at one car park in Truro at the weekend, or should I say no marks.
If Cornwall Council wants to win points for putting people off spending money in the city at a time when all businesses are desperate for trade, then they get ten out of ten. Yours truly was among the queue waiting to pay at one of those pay and display machines that are a curse wherever the motorist goes, only to be told: “It will only accept pound coins” by a somewhat harassed car park attendant.
Like others, I only wanted to park for less than an hour and for that it cost 80p. What’s more I had made sure I had sufficient change to feed the meter with 80p.
Luckily I also had a pound coin, something some others did not have and were patiently hoping a good Samaritan would come along and help out.
In the meantime, the somewhat hassled car park attendant walked off with a shrug of the shoulders saying there was nothing he could do and continued to check the cars already parked.
Me? I used my one pound coin for 80p worth of parking, returned in good time and still found a queue at the parking machine.
Now my point is this – will Cornwall Council, which is responsible for most of the parking in the county, pay me the 20p I am owed and everyone else for that matter?
Of course not. They will continue to reap in the rich rewards they get from parking whatever the situation. They cannot even agree on a one-charge system for Cornwall or even a parking ticket which allows motorists to use more than one car park if having paid for it in one and not used up their allotted time.
