Personal Overview - Possesses a strong Cornish heritage in a peninsula which is often rather parochial compared to much of modern Britain. At the 2005 General Election he was Head of Press to Michael Howard as Leader of the Opposition, a move back towards the mainstream of Westminster politics having been a former member of UKIP (he stood for UKIP in the 1999 European Parliamentary elections for the South West region). Following the 2005 General Election he moved onto David Cameron's leadership campaign team acting as his Press Secretary from 2005-2007. His family are long-term Cornish residents, his ancestors have been traced back 400 years and at the family farm at Gwinear (between Camborne and Penzeance near the A30) for around 150 years. There is a educational element to the farming concern with around 3,000 children visiting the farm each year to learn about farms and farming. Production is mixed, there is a sizeable fruit farming concern at Trevaskis (selling principally to the major supermarket chains) and also a cattle and pig rearing element including a herd of rare Cornish pigs (Lop pigs).

Characteristics - A keen athlete in previous years he was a member of a Cornwall Athletic Club and he still runs regularly to keep fit.

Personal Overview - Former Conservative Peer who defected to the UK Independence party successfully gained election to the European Parliament at the 2009 elections. From a background in accountancy, he has worked in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates and US. A former Hereditary Peer, he lost his seat in the House of Lords in November 1999 in the Lords reforms of that year. Having reinvented himself as a UK Independence member he has the opportunity to use his accountancy skills to highlight any financial issues within the EU.
