Ladies a force to be reckoned with

The ladies team from Cornwall Athletic Club proved they are a force to be reckoned with on the national road running scene, producing some great performances in the recent prestigeous Bath Half Marathon, finishing third behind the "big guns" of Team Bath Athletic Club and Bristol and West Athletic Club, writes Alan Rowling.

The Camborne based vetinary surgeon, Jo Friday, led the way, finishing ninth lady and 112th overall out of 10,009 finishers. Jo knocked a massive four minutes off her personal best time, clocking 78 minutes 20 seconds, which averages just under six minutes per mile. After the race a delighted Jo commented: "I am really pleased with that race. I ran strongly throughout, not flagging in the closing stages and hitting my intermediate check times spot on."

Donna Hillman also benefited from the quality opposition, which this kind of event provides, finishing as 19th lady in 83 minutes 7 seconds and improving her half marathon best for the second time in two weeks. Not to be outdone, Emma Stallard continued her good form in 26th place, also setting a new best time of 85 minutes 45 seconds, despite slowing a little towards the end. An emotional Suzy Bosustow was the fourth Cornwall AC lady across the line, improving her personal best by an incredible ten minutes, finishing 26th in 86 minutes 41 seconds. Lynette Torr also ran well clocking 1 hour 56 minutes 14 seconds to finish in the top half of the field.

The club's men's team finished fourth, narrowly edged out of the prizes by third placed Cardiff Athletic Club but reminding the road running fraternity that these days Cornwall Athletic Club are very much a force to be reckoned with in major events.

The men were led home by Matt Pullen, who had a great run, despite suffering badly with a stitch in the last mile and losing a lot of time. He still ran a three minute personal best of 72 minutes 40 seconds for 34th overall. Team captain Dave Buzza cruised home in 41st place (73 minutes 6 seconds) and should be near the top of the veteran's 45-49 category. It was good to see Noel Kindon back in action after injury. Despite suffering on the second lap, a dogged Noel hung on for 57th place in 74 minutes 20 seconds. Matt Lewis, "fresh" from the birth of his son, ran well for 90th overall in 77 minutes exactly to bring home the first team, with Dave Angilley showing that his training is going well, crossing the line in 82 minutes 16 seconds in 183rd position.

Ken Curtis stormed round for a new best time of 88 minutes 7 seconds in 411th and Vet 50 Pete Torr paced himself immaculately as usual to overhaul Danny Marsh and finish in 806th position in 93 minutes 38. Danny hung on well to take 937th in 95 minutes 30, with the charging Viv Bray closing him down rapidly, clocking 96.37 for 1031st and a ninety second personal best.
