Spiralling costs have forced almost 100 job losses at a Redruth meat factory.

Tulip Ltd (formerly Roach Foods) announced yesterday that it intended to reduce the number of employees at its Redruth site, resulting in the potential loss of around 98 meat processors and packers.

Drew Weir, operations director for Cornwall, highlighted ever-increasing costs in an industry that was over-capacity as the reason for the job losses.

Mr Weir said: "Obviously we are very disappointed that we have not been able to secure all of the positions at our Redruth site. However as you are no doubt aware the meat industry is currently over capacity. This, combined with spiralling raw material and processing costs, means that our Redruth operation must ensure that it is the lowest cost producer and that we can operate competitively in what is a very challenging trading environment.

"I can assure you that the proposed redundancies are in no way a reflection on the quality or dedication of our workforce."

Management will now enter into consultation with all employees, and their representatives, about the proposed redundancies.

Julia Goldsworthy, MP for Camborne and Falmouth, today spoke of her sadness at the news.

Ms Goldsworthy said: "News of proposed job cuts at Tulip is very sad indeed. It will be a massive blow to many of those personally affected by the 98 job cuts, but is also potentially a worrying indication of the state of the wider economy.

"Tulip need to ensure that there is proper consultation with staff on the terms that are agreed, and should ensure that as much support as possible is provided to help affected individuals find alternative employment.

"I will do whatever I can to ensure adequate support is provided -both by employer agencies and by government agencies, both of which have an important role to play."

it saddens me to hear that tulip will be laying off so much of their workforce, i think the first people to go should be the polish! they have every intntion to go back to their own country at some time later this year so why not give them a little kick to help them on their way. why not they have been a menace to society since they first arrived, their is evidence of this every week in the local papers of them drink driving,no insurance and fighting.i think we should be looking after their own who have mortgages, where as the poles rent and could just go at anytime, yes get rid of the bad eggs first i agree cause their are some lazy english who need a good kick up the backside, but then it should be the poles.i am sorry if this post offends anyone or thinks that i am being facist but i am looking out for my fellow cornish people who have kids end houses to pay for thats all.

The way that the company are dealing with this problem is totaly discusting. The people who have been selected for redundencey have to wait a further 2 wks before they get told if the have a job or not. The atmosphere within the factory is very solam and people are very angry and upset. It is not right that the company are saying that even if a person has had time off due to pregnancey and illness counts as points against you. It is terrible and very worrying time. The management to me dont seam to be understanding in any way as they say that are. That is total rubbish

I belive that if the company never took on so many polish then the english would have their jobs still in their own country. It feels as if the english are being punished unfairley. The company should look after their own before the polish workers. The polish get more in our country than what we do. They every benefit going, rent all the properties, take our jobs. In our work place they get away with everything. It appears to be if you are in with the management then you will be just fine. One rule for some and different for others. This whole situation is totaly upsetting. The way that this is being delt with is unfair and certainley not unprofessional for a company of this size.

98 workers to go and they are still waiting to be told after there was a mess up in the calculations process, pregnant woman are also on the hit list as are many people that have worked there for over 10 years, workers are not being told the truth and agency workers are on the cards to replace the redundanties when more work arrives. its funny because all but a few of the 22 lines are still working, what are they up to...........
