Helston has played its part in raising money for a clean water project.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints walked around the Penrose Estate to raise money on behalf of the Samaritan's Purse "Turn on the Tap" project, which ran nationwide.

Over 150 fund raising walks took place across the country to help raise money for the project, which helps poor people in Africa and Asia get safe, clean water.

The walk held in Helston was also raising money for a local young boy. People of all ages took part in the walk and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

An estimated £3,000 has been raised for the cause, with possible match funding from other local businesses to come. An exact amount raised will be known at the end of the month.

Over 100 people took part in the four-mile walk, which included other people from the town.

The event also contained a coin trail, large barbecue and a balloon release. One balloon was released for each person attending and each donation given.

The food for the barbecue was all donated from local supermarkets and so much was given that the event organisers decided to give some of the food to the homeless people at St Petroc's Society. Many businesses in the area also donated money to the cause.

Maribel Veal, who organised the event, said she was "thrilled" at the how generous the public had been, with many asking how they could donate.

She added that the church was very pleased with how local businesses had responded to donation requests and was thankful for their generosity.
