In a potentially controversial move, Falmouth's councillors have offered no objections to plans proposing the conversion of an empty town centre office into a Domino's Pizza takeaway outlet.

Although members of the town council's planning committee indicated their "reluctance" to do so, they offered no objections to the application for 40 Killigrew Street/9 The Moor, provided there were no highway issues.

The decision split the council, with an initial proposal to recommend refusal of the plans narrowly failing by one vote. The subsequent proposal to offer no objections was passed by the same margin of a single vote.

The committee heard from Richard Unwin, on behalf of the Domino's Pizza Group, who told them his clients would be investing at least £250,000 into the business, which would generate employment.

"I think it would be a great addition to the retail area," he added.

In response to questions from councillors, Mr Unwin said the opening times were likely to be around midday until 11pm, adding: "We don't apply for late night premise licenses. We don't want that kind of business."

The outside appearance was likely to be a curved façade in red and blue and the sign could either be illuminated internally or externally.

Members also heard from former Falmouth police officer Mr Croft, who raised concerns about potential highway problems.

Mr Croft questioned where the pizza outlet's delivery vehicles would be parked and also where customers collecting pizzas would pull up.

Mr Croft added: "We are losing, again, an office space within the town. We are very slowly driving all offices out of the town."

Falmouth mayor Mike Varney said he was "disappointed" the proposal was another Italian-style establishment when two or three had only recently been opened it the town, in addition to a long-standing restaurant, but added: "Unfortunately we cannot dictate what goes in there."

He concluded: "Reluctantly, subject to highways there's not an awful lot we can do about it."

Councillor Diana Merrett believed there had recently been "far too many" applications for food outlets in the town, which was going to become "overpowered" with them.

But councillor John Body said: "Surely as a town we would like to see the premises being used for something rather than an empty shop, which is an eyesore? At the end of the day, if people don't want it they won't use it and it won't last long."

Great news its about time national chains such as Domino are coming to Falmouth (although would love it if K.F.C came to our town),instead of providing obstacles we should welcome them with open arms.

Glad this was approved but it sounds like the council were looking for any excuse to refuse it.

The town council need to get real and wake up - that office has been empty for years. Dominos will bring a new attraction and jobs to the town centre.

The councillors should be welcoming with open arms these national chains that are coming to Falmouth ... instead of trying to turn them away. Now all we need is a Cinema !!

Well, it looks like Falmouth is stepping up to the plate in the tackiest town in cornwall competition. We will be in the bun fight with Newquay over the lowest of the low rent tourists.

Its a same that the councillors can't get there noses out of their trough. Look across the water, see what happens in the Roseland, fewer high value tourists spend much more money than the benefit fraudsters wo choose to holiday in Falmouth. If it weren't for the drownies Falmouth would make Redruth look like a cultural and commercial mecca.

Cheap chains are the opposite of what Falmouth should be striving for, high class botiques anf high class amenities to attract high spenders.

I notice some objections from Mr Croft, I was just wondering if this is the same Mr Croft who owns the PIZZA PANTRY? and the same Mr Croft who has his taxis parked on the pavement and yellow lines opposite the pizza pantry, hmmmm double standards spring to mind.......

At last!
This may attract more people to Falmouth, rather than them go to Truro for Pizza Hut!

Hello!
I think it would be super yum if there was a Dominoes Pizza here in Falmouth. I aren't usually a fan of big companies but there are no pizza delivery places here apart from Pizza Pantry, which in my opinion is a terrible pizzeria...the pizzas are far too expensive and taste like the bases are made out of cardboard...or pre bought in and defrosted! BoOOoooo to them I say!

I've been waiting for Falmouth to step into the 21st century and get Dominos into town - they're delicious and Pizza Pantry pizza is VILE, what a relief it will be to have a delivery place that might actually stand a chance of delivering something hot and edible - the students will certainly love it. I agree with another poster, all we need now is a cinema - I cannot fathom why the council would be against this idea, the business generates jobs and will be very popular.

it will be great to actually have a good delivery service here! its about time right! also someone further up said we need higher class stores etc basically mroe expensive, but they seem to forget that the locals need to be able to afford to live here full time! so its not just for the tourists. Also, we will be having a cinema opening this winter which will be a merlin cinema called pheonix :P
