Almost 50 post office are destined to close in Cornwall under proposals by the Post Office Ltd. They include two in Falmouth town, Bar Road and Killigrew Street as well as Flushing, Budock and Devoran. Others in Truro, Helston, Redruth and Pool will also shut and among them the Post Office serving thousands of people at RNAS Culdrose.

Of the 227 branches which are proposed to remain in Cornwall it is proposed to establish 13 as outreach services, particularly in smaller communities - where the existing branch is proposed for closure.

Possible types of outreach service in Cornwall could include a mobile service visiting small communities at set times, a hosted service operated within third party premises for restricted hours each week, a partner service within the premises of a local partner (such as a pub landlord) or a Home Service were services are ordered in advance for delivery direct to the customer at home.

A consultation period is now under way and is due to end on September. The move comes despite a campaign by many in the area to save post offices in rural areas.

The purpose of the local public consultation is to obtain views on Post Office Limited's proposals to ensure that the branches that are ultimately selected for closure, or closure and replacement with an Outreach Service, are appropriate.

Post Office Limited has made it clear that it's programme is not designed to provide a forum for debate on whether branches should close, but is about ensuring that Post Office Limited has the best available knowledge to allow it to make the most informed decisions about which branches should close.

Tim Nickolls, Post Office Ltd's network development manager for Cornwall, said: "Taking the decision to close any Post Office branch is always very difficult and we know will cause concern to many of our customers. We want to ensure that everyone who uses, relies on or has any concern with post office services is both fully aware of the proposed changes, and able to give views on them."

Post Office Ltd claim 89.3 per cent of the area's population will see no change at all to their nearest branch. A further 9.1% live less than one mile, by road distance, from the nearest alternative branch, with 4.4% within half a mile.

Of those in Falmouth, Truro, Helston and Camborne-Redruth areas to close are: Ashton, Fore Street, Ashton Helston, TR13 9RN.

Budock Water, Falmouth, TR11 5DR.

Carharrack, Church Street, Carharrack, Redruth, TR16 5RW.

MP for Falmouth and Camborne, Julia Goldsworthy MP plans to fight each and everyone of the proposed closures. She said: "We will be working hard with local people to fight each and every one of these closures.

"We must protect the future of our Post Offices, which play such an important role in our lives, not only in terms of accessing services but also in providing a focal point for local communities in the area."It is an outrage that, after promising a full and proper consultation process, the Government will now be running this consultation over the summer months, when many people will be away on holiday or too busy with the influx of visitors to make their views fully known."We will not allow this cynical choice of timing to affect our campaign to save our Post Offices and local people are ready to fight these misguided and destructive proposals."There will be a public meeting on Thursday at 7pm ast the Flushing village club, another on Saturday, 10am, The Mills Hall, Caharrack, 1.30pm, Close Hill, Drump Road Children's Centre, Redruth, 2pm, Tregolls School, Truro, 3pm: Pool Business and Enterprise College, Sunday July 20, 11am, Budock Village Hall, Tuesday July 22, 7pm: WI Hall, Webber St, Falmouth.

I don't see how the town centre post office in Falmouth is going to cope with the extra customers once Bar Road and Killigrew Street close, they're understaffed as it is.

Ann Parker, Falmouth says...

This is ridiculous. To use the Moor post office, you have to pay to park and wlak through town with your post.
Boslowick Post office has a limit of 6 parcels allowed to post per customer. Neither of these offices has disabled access so where will the disable customers go?

This is a very sad day for Falmouth and its residents

I am one of the many who felt that the Falmouth Post Office should have gone to Costcutter in Market Strand. What we now have at the main Post Office is a half baked set up, with unfinished shopfitting, which has gone bust once and is on the market for sale at a stupid price. It is totally incompetent in its ability to offer prompt service and queues are a reality nightmare. So the powers which be are trying to make it even more busy, and by that I expect total Chaos!
It is a sad day for Falmouth, though I expect the politicians, especially the useless Tory Candidate,
Sarah Newton, will have a heart rending tear breaking, save our post office mission.

readers fighting to save there post offices can also sign a petition on the prime ministers web site at
http://petitions.pm.
gov.uk/postsave/ to help save royal mails six days a week delivery service across the united kingdom.

Pat, Truro says...
7:36pm Tue 15 Jul 08

Everyone in the effected areas must help to stop these by signing the petitions & back their local MP's I personally was sad to hear of certain closures, Budock Water this is only a village but it is the heart of the community not everyone will have transport to go to another post code.In Truro both these post offices you are able to park there I personally use Kenwyn alot because of parking I will not be able to do this if it closes

I expect the whingers are about to start, led by the Crocodile tears of the hypocritical politicians. Take the Tories for instance, I remember when they closed 2500 Post Offices. Face it and lump it! all the Post Offices will be gone within 10 Years, because you the, readers are not using them.

Kevin, Falmouth says...

What on earth are the more elderly in Flushing or Budock going to do. Catch a ferry to Falmouth ot wait for one of the buses to turn up. Fat Cats sat behing there fat desks do not think about any problems that these ideas will cause. People go to there local post offices not just for postal services but just to see some of their friends and it could be the only people they see all day. As for the 2 offices in Falmouth,as the first comment said, their is no way the counter on the moor will cope with anymore customers. No fault of theres but will not handle it.

I am one of hundreds that signed the petition to keep the post office on the moor, main reasons being, access and that it is i believe a "crown post office" and not a "sub office".
The move to "Costcutters was mainly refused due to its location on one of the most busiest and dangerous bends in the town centre, and with elderly people trying to cross the road could be a recipe for disaster. as for the queue's, i can remember people out to the door in the old "crown office", even when it was fully manned.
If the post office on the moor is overrun with people, then they will have to fit an extra 4 or 5 positions, so they can cope.

Sorry to upset you old boy, sorry, local boy, but Falmouth Moor Post Office is no longer "Crown".
It is a Bust Franchisee 6 desk, unviable and unfinished post office, temporarily being run by Post Office Counters, because nobody wants it at £385,000 for the Leasehold Business.
Remember the previous owners walked out with one big headache, after spending a fortune and a lot of bragging that they had saved the Falmouth Post Office. It was closed for 10 days, whilst the Post Office Counters Management ran around like Headless Chickens for a solution to keep it open.
What goes around will come around again.
Hasn't the Crown Crest over the door been secretly removed along with the Crown crested Clock?

Local Boy, Falmouth says...

Point taken SS.
But one thing i do know, is that the clock is coming back after being refurbished.

Sammy Smith, says...
12:09am Wed 16 Jul 08

Some of these Owners of the Post Offices named for closure are shouting for joy as they rake in anything between £30,000 and £100,000 severence compensation from the tax payer, and all tax free.

Mr A. Nonymous, Falmouth says...
5:46am Wed 16 Jul 08

Sammy, good for them - I think they deserve a bit of compensation having lost their businesses that they have probably put a lot of time and money into over the years!

By the way, there's something that the Post Office aren't telling you about their outlet on the Moor....

Sammy Smith, says...
7:27am Wed 16 Jul 08

Nous says "good for them- I think they deserve a bit of compensation having lost their business..."

Yes, not bad to get tax free compensation when you only work a business 9-5, which is bust at base. What other Private Business gets a Tax Free State Handout if it goes belly up.

Sarah Lyle, Falmouth says...
5:36pm Wed 16 Jul 08

There's not even any point in signing petitions as the PO closures are all to do with an EU Directive and there is nothing this cowardly authoritarian government can do - even if it wanted to. We are run by Brussels - all these Focus Groups and Plublic Meetings are a PR excersise. Nothing can come of them. Its very sad.

Sarah Lyle, Falmouth says...
5:40pm Wed 16 Jul 08

It don't help that I can't spell either!

mike leader, camborne says...
8:29pm Wed 16 Jul 08

if we were not in the eu we would not be in this mess; it directives 97/67/EC and
2002/39/EC .we have to do as we are told by the eu

Sammy Smith, says...
8:02am Thu 17 Jul 08

So the EU is to blame for our PO closures.
So is the answer to vote for Corcoran the UKIP candidate at the next General Election if we want to save our PO? He will give the EU Parliament a bloody nose.

Sarah Lyle, Falmoutyh says...
7:14pm Thu 17 Jul 08

The "EU Parliament" are a sham too. Nothing democratic ever goes on in there. Whereas other countries in the EU ignore directives our govt can't wait to act on them and deliberately run the PO and our Royal Mail down (and pay a massive bonus to the big stink at the top that does its bidding)

Fred, Falmouth says...
1:12pm Mon 21 Jul 08

Sara Lyle...You mustn't worry you did spell "either" correctly

John, says...
4:56pm Mon 21 Jul 08

The "USELESS TORIES" referred to above by another post are hipocrites of the highest order in their campain to save the cornish post offices.
They have set up a WEBSITE and published all their mobile numbers etc etc.
BUT no encouragement to the Packet Readers to write a letter or send a postcard!!!! which is what the POST office is all about!!!!!!
They make me sick, as they are detached from us people.

Sarah Lyle, Falmouth says...
6:29pm Mon 21 Jul 08

Thanks Fred, I was worried.

All the politicians are useless. They don't listen to the likes of them's what elected em. Democracy is a joke in this country!

Mike Wilkins, Launceston says...
11:52am Tue 22 Jul 08

Writing letters and making protests are a total waste of time, if your post office is on the list believe me it's going. We have had our MP and our MEP fighting our corner, our post mistress has been to the house of commons but all of their efforts have been in vain. Our post office shop is the only shop in a so called "Major Village" 5 miles out of Launceston has no public transport and the nearest post office is 4.6 miles away along a single track lane. Closing our village PO and Shop has effectively killed our village life as our shop will have to close. Without the PO income the shop will not be a viable proposition. I am one pensioner among many in the village who won't be able to pop to the shop for his daily paper, pint of milk, bread ect.,and I don't think a 10 mile round trip is an option. I could put down many many more reasons for keeping our PO open but it would take to long to write. Best of luck with your efforts to retain your village life. MW, St Giles on the Heath

Sammy Smith, says...
3:46pm Tue 22 Jul 08

Well said Mike. If you protesters want to save the Post Office and your amenities like the Pub and the Local Shop, stop shopping at Tesco and Asda and the other Supermarkets, who are in the main selling Chinese Tat. The PO is very much a British Brand.
