An extraordinary young talent and star in the making was one of the acts booked to play at an event in aid of Cornwall Hospice earlier this month.

Martin Skews, 15, a student at Penryn College, played an impressive acoustic set of both covers and songs he wrote himself as part of the charity entertainment on July 2, at Falmouth Football club.

One of the songs that stood out was a breathtaking rendition of Lionel Richie's All Night Long'. The youngster's handling of the African style singing in particular was masterful and lent a real carnival feel to the atmosphere.

Luke Mitchell, one of the captive audience members on the night, said: "He makes Lionel Richie look rubbish."

Martin wasn't able to explain why his voice sounds the way it does. He said: "I just sing. I've been singing all my life. It's basically 15 years of practice."

The teenager recorded his own songs whilst on work experience at Ocean Audio recording studios on Tregoniggie Industrial Estate in Falmouth. He said: "Work experience was brilliant. I've recorded two songs - it didn't feel like work."

Chris Morris a former guitarist of 70s band Paper Lace, is the owner of Ocean Audio studio and described Martin as "naturally talented". He added: "Martin stands out and when that happens you know you've got something really special."
