Helston volunteers to whitewash 'eyesore' walls
11:00am Friday 26th October 2012 in News
Fed up with Helston’s cracked and peeling whitewashed walls being an eyesore a ‘self help group’ is tackling the long-running problem head on.
The project is being led by Helston-born veterinary surgeon and self-confessed “Flora Day enthusiast” John Head, who is being supported by members of Helston-Lizard Rotary Club.
They will provide the manpower for the repainting project, which will be carried out in the run up to Flora Day. Mr Head wants to improve the state of the town’s walls, which are a point of pride for the town on Flora Day, Helston’s day of celebration.
With Cornwall Council no longer having the funds available to complete the annual painting of the walls, due to budget cuts, Mr Head has put together an improvement group. To help make the scheme possible a fundraising concert is being held next month, for which tickets go on sale this Friday (October 26).
The money raised will be spent on buying the necessary materials to renovate the walls, starting with St John’s Penhellis and Meneage Road. The fundraising concert will take place on Wednesday, November 28 at the Kingsford Venue at Flambards, starting at 7.30pm.
The evening will include a concert performed by Helston Town Band and a light-hearted talk by John Head on the subject “Life as a Vet”, looking back at 135 years of family veterinary practice in Helston.
Both will be appearing free of charge, with the Kingsford Venue also being provided at no cost. Tickets costing £9.50, which will include a pasty, will be on sale from 26th October 2012.
They will not be available on the door on the night and should be bought in advance from Dales the Butchers, Wearne’s the Jewellers, Bowden’s Home Hardware, Head & Head Vets or Steve Ford on 01326 563402.
