The power of dreams won out for Chris and Christine Power when they completed their marathon challenge to visit every Olympic gold post box in the UK.
The couple now deserve their own medal, after finishing their 4,000-mile journey in just 19 days – two days earlier than planned. Their Gold Medal Post Box Challenge finished on Saturday, when Chris and Christine visited their last seven post offices in the London area, to complete the list of 57 gold post boxes they have been to.
Mr and Mrs Power’s trip took them to the Pandora Inn at Restronguet to see Ben Ainslie’s post box, as well as Penzance’s addition for rower Helen Glover. They took photos of themselves next to every box and also picked up envelopes with the special commemorative stamp of each athlete date stamped/franked by each post office to prove the arrival date at each gold post box. They succeeded in all but one town – Larkhill in Wiltshire, where the post mistress refused point blank.
The trip has not been without difficulties, including getting stranded by floods and having their loaned Hyundai i30 vandalised.
Mrs Power, 65, who lives with her 69-year-old husband in Titchfield, said: “On the whole we have had a memorable and enjoyable experience. We have created a journal and album which will be passed to our grandchildren and kept for posterity as a tribute to the greatest Olympic Games ever held.”
