Falmouth Christmas lights switch-on

FOR the third year running, Falmouth’s Christmas lights will be switched on by a deserving member of the local community rather than a third-rate celebrity.

The Christmas lights will be switched on in front of hundreds of local residents at 7pm on Thursday, November 29 during a special celebration on The Moor.

Mr Gates said: “If you have any nominees please forward their details with the reason why you feel they deserve the chance to ‘light up’ Falmouth this Christmas.”

Nominations can be sent either via email to ruth@falmouth.co.uk or by phoning the Town Management office on 01326 313553. Nominations will close on Friday, November 16, and the lucky individual will need to be free from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on the evening of the switch on.

Didn't like "third-rate celebrity" - at least not in a straight news piece, as distinct, say, from a more personalised column. Chances are that a "third-rate celebrity" will still have had to work jolly hard to reach where they're at in life and can reflect on a genuine sense of achievement.

I think it is a good idea to have normal people from the local community. For several years Mullion either had different people from Radio Cornwall, Father Christmas, Councillor Carolyn Rule, etc, I think it would be better to have people like someone from Mullion in bloom etc, they do a lot of voluntary work in the community. (not that I am saying Carolyn isn't normal)
It would also be nice if they actually switched on the lights and not just the tree lights. All the rest of the lights are usually already on. Falmouth sound like they are doing it as I think it should be done, lucky them.

Think its a lovely idea to ask a deserving member of the public to do the switch on, wish other towns would follow as i am sure there are plenty of people out there that could be nominated. Well done Falmouth.
