Primary school children across Cornwall are learning more about road safety from Cornwall Council’s road safety through the Second Steps roadside training.

Second Steps is a practical child pedestrian training scheme which takes place at real roadside locations where specially trained instructors teach children to discover and develop safe pedestrian strategies through interaction and discussion.

The children, aged five to seven, who take part in the training learn three key skills: 1. Choosing safe places and routes to cross the road 2. Crossing safely between parked cars 3. Crossing safely at junctions This year, 17 schools across Cornwall are taking part in the Cornwall Council child pedestrian training scheme.

Tracy Porter, Road Safety Officer, says “With the risk of a child pedestrian being involved in a collision increasing when they start school, it is extremely important that our children are armed with the information they need to cross the road safely.”

The road safety unit is currently recruiting for trainers for schools in Camborne, Pool, Redruth, Penzance, Penryn, Falmouth and St Austell. The hours are variable and take place in term time during school hours (between 9.30am and 3.00pm, approximately 3 hours per day) on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
