CONTINUOUS HEAVY rain is bringing flooding to many areas of west Cornwall with some villages reported being nearly cut off.

Roads into Mylor Bridge and Mawnan Smith are badly flooded with blocked drains from fallen leaves causing the water to back up.

Flooding has also blocked the A39 in Devoran and the A394 at the junction with the B3304 in Helston.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for heavy rain for the region and is warning the public to be prepared for flooding.

Flood warnings remain across the South West with flood alerts also issued.

The Met Office is forecasting up to 40mm (1.6in) of rain to fall across the region today.

In a statement, the Environment Agency said: "Strong winds will increase the risk of flash flooding as drainage channels are likely to become blocked with wind-blown debris."

Cornwall Council has warned residents of Helston to "take immediate precautions" as river levels continue to rise.

An hour ago the authority revealed that agencies were monitoring the River Cober and Helston Leats, which at the time had not flooded.

The council has also warned of concerns over rising water levels in Trelawney Park, Penryn, where defences are said to be working although people in Commercial Road should "take precautions."

The fire service has announced it is now prioritising life or death situations.
