Musicians and singers from around Cornwall have the chance to work with one of Europe's most creative and musicians and teachers at an event near Penzance.

US-born Scott Stroman, who has worked with musicians around the world, including Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Cobham and Phil Collins, will be leading a community band and choir that is being formed in Ludgvan Churchtown.

Based at the Murley Hall, the event is being organised and run by Cornish writer and actor Tony Jasper, supported by Ludgvan Parish Church.

Tony Jasper said the event was aimed at anyone in Cornwall, from teenagers to centenarians, but it was essential that participants could play an instrument or sing.

Scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3 next year, places are limited and should be booked now.

Mr Stroman is a singer, trombonist, composer, conductor and educator, who directs the London Jazz Orchestra, The Guildhall Jazz Band and London's Eclectic Voices Choir.

He has written pieces for jazz orchestra and jazz choir, including Jazz Mass and Jazz Psalms, commissioned to close the 2010 Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester.

During the two-day event Tony Jasper will lead sessions on the history of jazz and gospel. Tthere will also be a jazz concert (tickets £5) in Ludgvan Parish Church on Saturday, February 2 at 7.30 pm and a Jazz Vespers at 3pm on Sunday, February 3.

Tony Jasper said: “This could be Cornwall's first ever jazz/gospel service. I think any past ones would have been trad jazz, but this is mainstream.”

Booking forms for the workshops, which cost £10 for the day, are available from Tony Jasper, Milsrof, Eglos Road, Ludgvan Churchtown, Penzance, TR20 8HG. Applicants are asked to enclose a stamped, addressed envelope.
