There was a ‘freestyle’ approach to training being given to teenagers in Redruth recently.

Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change ran its Freestyle programme for 18 teenagers aged between 14 and 19, who were not in education, employment or training.

The programme was designed to encourage young people to build on their skills and work towards employment, education or volunteering work.

Tasha Mitchell, from Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C), said: “For most of the young people on the programme this is their first certificate that they have achieved.

“We decided to hold a celebration event in order for them to share their success with their families, friends and also the organisations which are in contact with the young people. This gave them the chance to be proud and show off their achievements.”

Throughout the year-long programme the teenagers were given one-to-one support and shown how to apply for jobs, write CVs and practise interview techniques.

Since then the teenagers have gone on to do courses in hairdressing, mechanics and childcare, as well as attend a Deep Blue Sound music programme.

Others have started volunteering and carried out apprenticeships with Carn Brea Leisure Centre and Cornish Hedging.

“We are extremely proud of the young people and how much time and effort they have put into the last 12 months and pleased that they are now doing something which they enjoy,” added Tasha.
