More heavy rain is expected to hit Cornwall this evening, leading to fears of further flooding across the Duchy.

Homes were evacuated in Helston last night due to rising levels on the River Cober, where the fire and rescue high volume pump is still in use. Although the river levels are continuing to drop, the area is still a concern for the emergency services. The Environment Agency are arranging for over pumping to start again at Loe Bar.

The A39 between Falmouth and Truro has reopened after flooding was cleared.

A Cornwall Council spokeswoman said: "Although the worst of the severe weather appears to be passed through Cornwall for the moment, the latest forecast suggests that more heavy rain will be coming into the county from 5pm this evening.

"There is expected to be 30 mm of rainfall during a six hour period from 5pm. As this is falling on saturated ground, this could cause further flooding in the key areas. "All agencies are continuing to deal with the current situation and are preparing for the further period of rainfall this evening.

"The latest reports suggest 10 plus properties have been affected by flooding in Mevagissey, with around 40 affected in Millbrook.

"Fire and rescue and Cormac crews are still dealing with the incident at Hannafore Road in Looe where the road has been blocked by two fallen trees and a landslip.

"Two lanes remain closed on the A38 at Trerulefoot and the A388 Dutson Road in Launceston is closed. The fire and rescue service are also dealing with an incident at Tresarrett Bridge, near Bodmin where people are trapped in a car which is stuck in flood water.

"The A39 between Truro and Falmouth has now re opened to traffic.

"There has been an increase in the number of calls since daylight, and all agencies are continuing to respond.

"The level of the River Fowey in Lostwithiel is still causing concern as the river levels are not dropping.

"A severe flood warning is going to be issued by the EA in the near future. The levels of the River Hayle in St Erth are still rising – the situation is not critical but the EA are monitoring the situation closely.

"Localism staff are supporting local communities which have been affected by flooding and will remain on standby as needed. "Recovery groups were initiated at 8am this morning. This process is being led by Rob Andrew."
