The emergency services were out searching Penryn Harbour in the early hours of this morning, after a drowned dog sparked fears that its owner might also be in difficulty.
At about 1.20am, the police called the fire and rescue service - and the coastguard - following a report of a dog in the water off a pontoon at Exchequer Quay.
Firefighters from Falmouth and Redruth, some specially trained in water rescue, were mobilised alongside the coastguard rescue team, RNLI inshore lifeboat and the police.
After a 30 minute search, firefighters spotted a small dog floating in the water from their inflatable rescue boat.
The dog had not survived.
The search continued to try and find anyone that might have been with the animal, with rescuers using a thermal imaging camera to sweep the area.
But after another hour of looking, teams were stood down at 3am and the search called off with nobody found.
