A group of creative volunteers calling themselves the Cable Stitchers has crafted a colourful menagerie to help local school children learn about the world underwater...through the medium of wool!

Based at Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, the group is made up of volunteers who share a love of needle crafts. Their latest project has been knitting colourful sea life for the Museum’s new school workshop which teaches primary school children about Cornwall’s sea life.

The project has been so successful that the group is now appealing for new members; “You don’t need to be an expert at knitting or sewing to join the group. We’re open to everyone, and those with even basic skills will find projects that suit them. It’s also a great way to improve your skills, and to meet new people in a friendly and welcoming group.”

- Janet Standring, Volunteer Coordinator, Porthcurno Telegraph Museum.

The group meets twice a month at the award-winning Museum. Anyone who is interested in getting involved but can’t make it to group meetings is invited to take part through the remote volunteering group, the Castaways.

“If you want to work from home, and you will still be fully supported by the Museum and very much a part of the team.” Janet Standring.

The group has been supported by local needlecraft shop, Iriss of Chapel Street, Penzance where the volunteers regularly stock up on yarn as well as rag-rugging supplies. The shop is currently showcasing the group’s work in their window; beautiful knitted dolls created using original 1940s patterns.
