Truro and Falmouth MP, Sarah Newton, has met with the defence minister to push for A&P Falmouth to win a Royal Navy ocean survey ship maintenance ontract.
HMS Scott is the Royal Navy’s only ocean survey ship and is currently deployed in the Middle East to survey the ocean floor.
The contract for her future maintenance is being put out to tender and A&P Falmouth, already responsible for maintaining ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA), has submitted a bid to the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The contract would be a major boost to A&P Falmouth and the local economy.
Mrs Newton says she has met with Philip Dunne MP, minister for defence procurement at the MoD, in order to "remind him of A&P’s fantastic track record with MoD maintenance and their capability to take on more work in Falmouth".
Mrs Newton said: “I was very pleased to have met with the Minister and to have had the opportunity to highlight the great work that A&P have proven themselves to be capable of. The competition for this contract will be fierce but I believe that A&P will be able to submit a bid which is highly competitive and I will continue to do all that I can to help them in their efforts.”
The final decision is scheduled to be made on April 1 this year.
