Falmouth Beach Hotel site up for sale

The Falmouth Beach Hotel burnt down in May last year. The Falmouth Beach Hotel burnt down in May last year.

The Falmouth Beach Hotel sitel is being put up for sale after 30 years in one family.

Owner Hazel Evans has instructed Christie & Co to prepare the site for sale.

Christie & Co said the hotel, which burnt down last May, faced “an uncertain future.”

In a statement the company said: “Since the fire she has been carefully considering the hotel rebuild project, her future plans and possible retirement from the hospitality industry.

“Consequently, she has proposed a closure of the site and rebuilding work.”

A potential purchaser who will redevelop the hotel site is being looked for. In the meantime, Mrs Evans is working closely with her professional advisors.

Plans for the rebuilding of the hotel were granted conditional approval only this month.

I was surprised when they announced a rebuild of the hotel so soon after the fire.
With a plot of land such as this in prime position right opposite the beach, with it being totally levelled and fresh one doesn't just rebuild what was there before. The potential for the land is enormous.
Maybe advice was given if they did not see if before.

More than likely ,or a supermarket .

Wouldn't be surprised Gill and meerkats but as rmcclarity says the Residents Association runs the Seafront!!! Sounds to me like they have already had an offer - because what was all this talk of rebuilding bigger and better if they have not already had an offer!! Hm something fishy here but as I said I have been expecting this and its not exactly a surprise!!

I am intriqued about the claims that the residents association run the sea front, that does not sound very ethical to me.

No its not ethical Gill but unfortunately they do just look at the camper van story in the Packet. I have nothing against people moving down here but I just wonder how many of them are people who have retired down here?? Well sorry if you don't like it you shouldn't have moved here but it is a case of money talks as in everything these days which is the reason I suspect behind this story. They have obviously been made a good offer for the site and by getting the planning permission will get more money for the site - not stupid but so clearly planned.

A residents association may work closely with a local town council but that should not afford them any privileges over any other residents. They have no more legal rights than anyone else. I know what you mean about money talks, take a look at the supermarkets planning applications.

It could be too many hotel beds in the town, but not enough bodies to fill them.

Unless you're going downmarket, and just doing coach tours !.

Well, in spite of all the conspiracy theories here I can only say that I am very sad that the Falmouth Beach Hotel will be no more. I first took my late parents there in 2001 and enjoyed many stays with my family, the last being just 4 weeks before the fire. It was a lovely hotel and I will miss it. I was hoping to be amongst the first to book in after the rebuild but that is obviously not to be. Thank you Hazel Evans for all the pleasure you gave us.

Yes, it was a lovely hotel and the Christmas decorations just made it look even more special. I loved the place too when it was the Pentargen Hotel, my friend and I spent some lovely times there when we were younger, drinking with the SAGA holidaymakers - happy times. Just hope that whoever buys the site, builds another lovely hotel and not more flats that are way out of the price range for most locals

The power of the Falmouth Bay mafia is being greatly exaggerated I think - they're organised NIMBYs who councillors try to placate when they kick up a fuss, but I doubt very much they'd be able to stop the might of a property developer.

I too am sad to see the back of the Falmouth Beach Hotel, though perhaps this is an opportunity for something truly radical - a landmark building - to be built?

Probably not... That would take someone who is forward thinking with a passion and zeal. (Something this town and the county planners seem to despise).

Well whatever they put there I just hope it is not a load of big flag poles and a statue.
Perhaps they should instal a 'Falmouth eye'

Here is the missing 'L' from install.

I personally think flats would be acceptable as long as they were for full time residential status and not second homes.

Flats might be acceptable to you Gill but from what I understand you don't live here.
I imagine the only people rejoicing at the prospect of having apartments are the current hotel and guest house owners.
Anyway after a few plain envelopes swapping hands I don't doubt that expensive apartments are on the way.

I am only thinking logically, if no one wants to re build a hotel there is little anyone can do about it, was the previous hotel doing well? Is there the market still in today's current economic climate for too many hotels in one area? Some former hotels in prime positions are now nursing homes. What would be the impact on local people if flats were to be built? would it not put money into the local economy if they were to be permanent residential status full time occupancy flats. It is only a thought.

I still think there is room for another hotel on the seafront. It was a popular hotel for weddings and Christmas functions certainly and always seemed to be doing well with the holiday trade. Your comment about former hotels in prime locations becoming nursing homes - cannot think of any in Falmouth that are in that category now - the Gwendra was but, I think I am right in saying, has now made way for flats.

Gill Zella Martin 09 says...

Perhaps I should have clarified my comment regarding former hotel/ nursing home, I did not specifically mean Falmouth, I was just making the point that prime locations for hotels are not necessarily a guarantee for a hotel to be successful forever, in a particular location. The Poldhu nursing home used to be a hotel and that has a prime location.
If the Falmouth Beach Hotel was doing exceptionally well then I am surprised if the owners do not wish to re build.

jane-w says...
12:36pm Sun 27 Jan 13

The hotel was very very popular with tourists and for events. For instance their Christmas nights are always sold out and they carry on into January and they also have the Beach Club which is very very popular. I tend to think this is a case of money changing hands and personally I would hate to see more flats built here as most of the hotels that have been knocked down are turned into flats for the rich old people who retire to the area and Falmouth is in danger of losing a generation as the youngsters will have no work due to the hotel shutting and also been unable to afford one of the flats on the other hand whilst not wishing to see a nursing home here either at least that would provide jobs. Its not a case of whether the hotel was doing well or not but how much she has been offered!!

Last post should have said 'people'

It is unfair to judge people or categorise people with no proof of anything. Likewise there is no use complaining about something if there is proof and one does nothing about it, I know what it is like to be judged and categorised unfairly and it is not very nice.

Could someone please clarify which Planning Committee agreed on £400,000 each as payments received in respect of Planning Agreements for Helstons latest supermarkets, and these were deemed as totally acceptable payments so that the Town Centre could be improved

The problem here is that Helston Town Centre has had its breath taken away by Tesco and Sainsbury, and the Council think that by receiving these monies with civic pride and good works, and by appointing specialists, revival of the dying patient will occur.

In the same light, perhaps the owners of a small business in the hospitality sector look to the planners, and a change of Class of Use alters the valuation of about 4 acres overlooking the sea by a few hundred thousand pound.

I take it that some of us consider that 100% of committee members are always good upright citizens lol

The 'procedure' of paying Councils off for effectively killing Town Centre business may be legitimate, but it has no real effect on bloggers who freely comment on the subject. In my view s106 agreements like the one entered into for Helston should not be allowed.

If anyone has knowledge where this type of s106 agreement has truly benefiited a small market Town, then I'd like to know about it, and how they made it successful.

What sort of economy do we want to see in the future ? Small business people spending all their spare time fighting the might of the share-driven profiteering supermarkets ? Or the likes of community-spirited Tesco wanting to wipe out every small town trader in their sights?

The so called 'above board' planning money should stop, but it is naive in the extreme to think that plain brown envelopes have never existed,or still do not in certain cases
