Kimberley Park to play host to music festival

A series of acoustic, live music events are being planned for Kimberley Park in Falmouth following the success of two previous similar events last year.

The Falmouth and Penryn Community Radio station, Source FM, have received the backing of town councillors who approved an application for a grant of £2,000 which would cover a third of the cost of staging six events over six months this spring and summer.

Parklive is the brainchild of the park’s head gardener, Julian Kay, who is also a Source FM presenter, and will see the free events staged on six Sunday afternoons.

Station manager, Matthew Rogers, said: “Parklive will showcase the range of creative talent living in the Falmouth area.

The event will be a community-centred, open and accessible activity for local families, residents and visitors to attend.

“We will encourage the public to visit Kimberley Park to hear live local acoustic performers; everything from brass bands to spoken word and singer-songwriters to jazz quartets will be carefully chosen to create an afternoon of gentle entertainment which is indicative of the wide variety of creative flair that exists in the Falmouth area.

“Our expectation is that Parklive will provide a vibrant addition to the existing series of events throughout the 2013 Falmouth calendar and attract new visitors to Falmouth, generating additional commerce for the town.”

A total of £6,000 is needed to stage the events and applications for funding to cover the full cost have been made. Falmouth Town Council’s finance and general purposes committee last week unanimously agreed the grant should be awarded.

“We need to encourage Kimberley Park to be used,” said councillor John Body.
