Attempting to buy a luxury car from a Falmouth garage with a dishonest cheque saw a ship’s captain jailed this week.
Malcolm Dowie, who gave an address in San Diego, USA, at an earlier hearing, was found guilty of committing fraud with a false cheque at Truro Magistrates’ Court last Monday.
The 69-year-old had attempted to buy a red Jaguar from Central Garage in Falmouth on May 5 but a cheque for £3,100 was returned unpaid by his bank, the court heard.
Dowie, who was said to have “an appalling criminal record and has expressed a total resistance to other court sentences,” was jailed for 12 weeks.
No action was taken for a further offence of breaching a 24-month conditional discharge, which was imposed by Teesside Magistrates’ Court in February 2011 for obtaining services dishonestly.
