Falmouth council freezes tax take

Falmouth Town Council has achieved its ambition of keeping its precept the same as the previous two years.

The council sets its precept based on a Band D property tax base, but changes agreed last week by Cornwall Council meant that to maintain a zero per cent increase, the town council would need to impose a £20 a year hike on Band D payers.

However the town council has been awarded a £133,000 mitigation grant by the county council that, if used as intended, would offset any increase.

Town clerk Mark Williams said: “My recommendation is we use the grant to offset the precept as intended.”

Councillors unanimously agreed, meaning the precept has been set at £979,468 for 2013/14.
