A Flushing drink driver who hit and injured a moped rider had drunk couple of Martini lemonades and went out after a call about the delivery of a kitten.

Diane Brown, aged 55, of Trevissome Court, Trevissome, pleaded guilty to drink driving at Arch Hill, Truro on January 10 when she registered 76 mcg alcohol in breath, more than twice the legal limit.

The court heard that a member of the public had been so concerned at Brown’s driving when her car was swerving over the road that he followed her car for quite a long way, during which time Brown’s car collided with a moped, injuring the rider, however she did not stop.

The same member of the public followed Brown into the football club car park, where she waited with him until the police arrived.

Alison May, for the Crown Prosecution Service, said the moped rider was making a good recovery from the accident but still had pain in one arm.

Robin Smith, for Brown, said she had been driving since 1985 and had a clean licence. She was extremely remorseful and contrite for what had happened. A mother of four, she had in the past been a teaching assistant for special needs children.

On this occasion there had been no particular reason for her drinking. She had no plan to go anywhere and decided to have a couple of Martini lemonades when she had a phone call from one of her daughters, which involved the delivery of a kitten.

The case was adjourned for a probation report.
