'Graffiti Grannys' knitted love for Porthleven harbour
Love was in the air at Porthleven last Thursday but just like all the best Valentine’s Day surprises those responsible remained anonymous.
The harbour railings were adorned with red knitted pom poms and a giant heart covered with knitted flowers and crochet hearts, bringing a sense of romance to the port.
The knitted novelties are believed to be the work of the so-called ‘Graffiti Grannys’ (sic).
They travel the county secretly “yarn bombing” various locations under the cover of darkness, to bring a smile to people’s faces.
Last year the nine members decorated a bandstand in Penzance, while the year before that St Ives got the crochet treatment.
While its members are fiercely secretive of their identity, one revealed that the dainty designs had taken a couple of months to create, with different people working in various aspects before meeting up to put the whole piece together.
One of the guerrilla grans said: “We chose Porthleven simply because we had never done anything there.
“We have been doing this now for three years this April. We started as we got a bit fed up with knitting jumpers etc and yarn bombing was then getting popular, so we decided to give it a go.
“It's great that people love what we do, and are always so positive about it. We like the anonymous bit – it keeps people guessing!”
