Budding badminton stars from Penryn College have impressed in a national tournament recently as they progressed to the county leg of the competition.

The Centreparcs National Schools Badminton Championships has seen more than 6,000 teams enter this season, with over 30,000 Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 children set to swing a racket in team competition between October and April.

Seven schools from the local area took part in the tournament held at Penryn College on Wednesday, February 6, with successful results for the college's teams.

Ross Hancock, from the school, said: “The Year 10 and 11 girls' team of Tegan Thompson, Ruth Barnicoat, Emily Toy and Sasha Wynn won their respective tournament, seeing off Helston in the final.

“The Years 7, 8 and 9 team of Sarah Frost, Amy Walker, Anna Mitchell and Amy Andrews did superbly well to also reach the final of the event but unfortunately lost to Camborne and had to settle for a runners-up medal.”
