Budding artists can now apply for a studio space in the Passmore Edwards building in Helston.

The Cornubian Arts and Science Trust (CAST) has announced the first call for studio applications for the building, which was bought by the charity last summer.

Ten studios, of various sizes, are available to rent. The studio spaces offer natural light, electricity and 24 hour access all year round. Rent prices range from £5 to £7 per square foot per year.

On Saturday students from Falmouth University joined with members of 750 Squadron at RNAS Culdrose to start painting some of the studios, in preparation for moving artists into the building.

Artists renting studios must offer open studio visits at least once a year, and will be encouraged to take part in and propose activities that would be of interest to other artists working in the building.

Applications will be considered according to the quality and potential of the applicant’s work, their commitment to make full use of the space to develop their own creative practice, and their interest in contributing towards a “strong and outward-looking creative community” in Helston.

Those applying must also show an understanding of the trust’s wider aims and its commitment to offering public benefit through research, practice and enjoyment of the arts and sciences in Cornwall, nationally and internationally.

Built in 1897, the Passmore Edwards School of Science and Art was given to the town of Helston by the philanthropist John Passmore Edwards. For the last three decades it has housed the community centre, but was boarded up in 2010.

The history of the building and its sale can be found online at thepacket.co.uk The institute currently needs extensive renovation. The east end will remain unoccupied until funds are raised for its repair, but a number of spaces in the western and central sections of the building are ready for immediate use.

The closing date for applications is Monday, March 18.
