A call has gone out for street traders to help make the return of street markets in Helston town centre a success.

The Helston Business Improvement Partnership (HBIP) is taking over their management and re-launching the weekly Monday and Friday market days.

The group will be providing colourful gazebos for hire and is looking for local existing and aspiring street traders to sell their wares.

The new revamped markets will start with a special event on Friday, April 5. The aim is to create a vibrant street market selling a variety of goods from craft, clothes, food and antiques. There are also plans to introduce a monthly Saturday market later in the year.

Emma Wooderson, who chairs the HBIP’s market group, said: “This is a very exciting time in Helston, revamping the market town with new and independent stall traders.

“We are hoping to invite well established traders, working alongside new stall traders who want to ‘give it a go’.”

She added that because of the Charter for Helston, traders could start selling from as little as £10 a day.

Jonathan Birkett, Helston’s town manager, said: “Refreshing our markets is fundamental to the growth of our town centre. They give local, small business the chance to trade alongside established, experienced traders, all while generating footfall for our town centre businesses.

“Simply, it adds to our overall town centre commercial offer.

“The secret to a successful market is getting good level quality produce and a broad range of traders. It’s clear that the project team understand this and what they are doing is fantastic.”

Anyone who has never traded before but makes their own products at home, as well as those who have been a market trader for years, can contact Emma Wooderson for an information pack, which includes instructions on how to start trading. Email emma.wooderson@epworthhall.com or call 07966 976068.
