Mylor's Olympic hero arose as a knight yesterday after receiving his New Year's honour from The Princess Royal.

Four-time Olympic sailing gold medallist Ben Ainslie, who learnt the sport in the waters around Restronguet, was knighted by Princess Anne at a special ceremony in Buckingham Palace.

The 36-year-old moved to Mylor as a young child and went to school in Penryn and later Truro School, learning to sail at Restronguet Sailing Club.

Now retired from Olympic sailing, Sir Ben said after receiving his knighthood: "It is obviously a huge honour. It is something to be very proud of."

He announced earlier this year that his next challenge is to try and win the America's Cup, which has not been won by a British club since 1851.
