Fresh call for action on rats in Falmouth and Penryn

Fresh calls were made this week for something to be done about Falmouth and Penryn’s rat problem.

Last year, the Packet brought you reports of rats “on the rise” - with one town councillor blaming the increase in vermin on the higher cost of pest control and improperly stored rubbish.

Now, one Falmouth resident is challenging others to come up with fresh ideas on “how we can solve the rat problem.”

Lorna Allen has created a page on the Cornwall Council affiliated “Shaped.By.Us” website, which aims to source ideas on how to help improve neighbourhoods and solve problems faced by Cornish communities.

“My neighbours have had rats in their house,” she said, “feeding ducks at Swanpool is no longer so much fun for my children and I saw a dead one on the road the other day.”

The problem has increased due to the council bringing in charges for having the pest control out to deal with rats. People simply can't afford it. Also look at the streets on rubbish collection/recycling days they get covered with rubbish etc which encourages the rats. Swanpool used to have the green rat boxes down there which seem to have disappeared and lately I have seen several rats down there. The numbers do seem to be on the increase.
