Falmouth toilets spend a penny and closure plan due to council cuts

Locals and visitors to Falmouth will be charged to spend a penny in two of the town’s most used public toilets and will see opening times reduced as a result of cuts being imposed by Cornwall Council.

The unitary authority was hit by a £170 million reduction in funding from central government in 2010 and as a result review some of the non-statutory services it provides, such as public toilets.

While many town and parish councils have agreed to take over control of their toilets, Falmouth Town Council has refused to take on the financial burden which it sees as being the responsibility of Cornwall Council.

Prince of Wales Pier and Grove Place will remain open all year round, but charges will be introduced. The toilets at Gyllyngvase, Castle, Maenporth and, Swanpool Beaches will be cut down to just weekend opening between November 1 and March 31 each year.

Would it not have made sense for the town council to take on some toilets and increase the precept to cover it, like other areas are doing. It's all very well keeping the precept at 0% but if a town loses facilities in a tourist area it surely is not such a good thing.
Good thing the CIC have taken over the running of the Prince of Wales Pier.

Paying for a pee where once one did not is a backward step. This isn't improving the visitor experience. We should be doing all we can to attract people not fleece them. As many people know I prefer to pee al fresco which is an altogether more pleasurable experience. There was a wonderful outdoor gents at Mylor Yacht Harbour where one could look over a wall at Carrick Roads whilst simaltaneously relieving one's self. The loo has now gone and the harbour is a lesser place for it.
I'm not suggesting that we men should be allowed to startle women and horses 'willy nilly' where ever we happen to be (God knows we're not French) just that we shouldn't make it difficult to pee for visitors.
