The next step in a dog mess campaign in Mullion will take place this Saturday with a mass clear up.

The Street Scrub event will begin at noon outside the Riviera Stores, when volunteers will be sluicing messy pavements with water.

Villagers are invited to get involved and raise awareness of the problem that has prompted 500 signatures (more than quarter of the village) on a petition in two weeks and |50 replies to one Facebook comment.

More details can be found online at thepacket.co.uk Saturday’s event is the latest in a series of measures being taken by a group of residents, who want to purge the poo from the pavements forever.

Louise Martin, from the group, said: “The campaign is to combat the dog fouling problems that are plaguing the area and there has been a lot of progress on the issue. The group has presented plans to Mullion Parish Council and we're delighted to say that joint action has been developed.”

The campaign group involves the council, businesses, the village’s primary and secondary schools, and many members of the community.

Awareness posters designed by Mullion Primary School pupils are being put up in the village and a dog warden is visiting both schools to talk to students.

Leaflets are also being distributed in the village, warning people it is an offence not to clean up after dogs in a public place and saying that dog mess can be put in any bin, with special bags available from Spar and Riviera Stores for around £1.50 for 200 bags.

The leaflet states: “Our aim is to considerably reduce this problem in a considerate manner without having to use local enforcement and legal recourses.

“We live in a lovely village and only want to keep it that way for residents and visitors’ alike. However, there is a call for the use of these powers to be brought into action and that will need to happen if this cannot be resolved between us.”
