Giant smiles could be seen stretching across Porthleven on Sunday – not least from charity mascot Mr Smiley.

He was there to help Roland’s Happy Plaice fish and chip shop launch its charity fundraising campaign for this year, which will benefit the Children’s Hospice South West.

Customers were invited to pay £2 to write a message on a smiley face cut out, which could then be hung on the ceiling.

Over the coming year all customers will be encouraged to do this, so that by the end of the year the whole ceiling will be covered.

The shop is also selling bears and badges on behalf of the charity.

Business owner Roland Lowery said of the launch: “It was brilliant. We had a lot of people out. A lot of people contributed a lot of money and bought things.

“It was a really nice afternoon to start the fundraising for this year.”

He chose the Little Harbour children’s hospice at St Austell to support as a continuation of the fundraising that has already been carried out in the port.

The Harbour to Harbour book of photographs showing the various characters in Porthleven has already raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

In addition, a regular customer from the takeaway is with the search and rescue squadron at RNAS Culdrose, which is this year celebrating the 60th anniversary of air sea rescue – and Little Harbour is one of the charity being supported through this.

At the launch day Mr Cool Magic, aka Paul Snowball, was there performing magic and he has promised to hold some magic shows at the hospice in the coming months.

To help encourage people to visit, Mr Lowery ran a one-day-only competition, to win fish, chips and mushy peas for two for a year, which was won by the Browning family from Porthleven.
