A Penzance nightclub has picked up the top award at the annual "Best Bar None Awards".

Sound, which won the "Best Nightclub" award, was also named the overall winner at the third annual awards evening held at Heartlands, Pool.

The scheme, based on national best practice to promote responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises, rewards those that meet minimum standards for licensing legislation including the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, prevention of nuisance, health and safety and protection of children.

Rob Matthews of Sound Nightclub said: “The management team are all still smiling after scooping three awards at this years Cornwall Best Bar None Awards Evening.

"It's nice is to be recognized by the professional bodies and governing bodies who work with the licensed trades. The public probably have the perception that we just open the doors and turn the music on, however behind the scenes we commit hundreds of hours of work, training each department to the highest level, from glass collector to the security team. We hope that through our efforts and commitment, that both the community and tourists visiting Penzance and our premises will feel safe. We look forward to entering all three of our premises next year”.

Des Tidbury, chief fire officer, presented the awards and highlighted the value of the scheme saying: “Licensed premises in Cornwall make an important contribution to the local economy. The high standards of management achieved by the premises represented here tonight reflects their ambition to provide a safe, top quality social experience for residents and visitors. The Cornwall Best Bar None Scheme provides the opportunity for premises to receive the recognition they deserve in achieving the standard required for accreditation and support for continued improvement in the future.”
