A bid to turn the former Hilltop Garage into a drive-through takeaway for pasties will be discussed by Helston councillors tomorrow (Thursday).
The town council’s planning committee will talk over plans by Helston Pasty Company Ltd for the garage at the top of Sithney Common Hill, in a meeting at the Guildhall from 6.15pm.
A change of use from a motor vehicle sale and repair garage has been applied for, so the company can manufacture Cornish pasties and sell them as takeaway food.
The pasties produced there would also be sold in shops around Cornwall and further afield.
In a supporting document from architects Laurence Associates it is stated: “Given the extent of the existing building and a prominent nature of the site, the applicants have aspirations that the site should become a showcase for the display and sale of Cornish produce.
"In this regard the applications believe that the site could become a tourist attraction in its own right.”
On Cornwall Council’s website there are ten objections from members of the public, with concerns over safety on an “excessively busy junction” and the effect on independent pasty traders within Helston town centre. Potential problems with odours and rubbish were also raised.
However, Laurence Associates claimed that since the proposal first became public it had received “significant local support.”
