Air engineer technician Thomas Baker, aged 22, has been selected from thousands of armed forces personnel for the honour.

The 771 search and rescue squadron members will be one of eight pallbearers from the armed forces for the service at Paul’s Cathedral in London, which will take place at 11am.

Major Dave Fielder from the Helston naval base said it was a massive honour, adding: “Culdrose is at the heart of Cornwall and for a Fleet Arm representative to be selected from here is very rewarding and emphasises the importance the Royal Navy continues to place on Culdrose and Cornwall's maritime heritage.

“Culdrose has a proud naval history stretching back to World War Two. Personnel from here have been involved in many ceremonial events in that time.”

A number of squadron members from Culdrose have travelled to London to line the streets.

Inside St Paul’s a total of 2,000 invited guests will pay tribute to Britain's first female Prime Minister, including the Queen.

At the end of the ceremony, the Bishop of London will commend the departed soul of Lady Thatcher into God's protection.

After this the body of Margaret Thatcher will be carried from St Paul's Cathedral to the hearse which will proceed to Mortlake in South London where she will be cremated.

With the Queen and Prince Philip there, along with members of the Government and numerous global leaders, it is thought security will be tight around the cathedral and the funeral route.

It is understood that 4,000 police will be on duty.
