Wheels are in motion to help a teenager from Mullion School buy a customised wheelchair and fulfil her ambition of becoming a paralympic athlete.

Lily Veal, who lives at Porthleven, has cerebral palsy but for the last two years has taken part in various sports.

She now needs a chair that will allow her to improve and fulfil her potential, but this will cost in the region of £2,300, with an additional £1,000 for rollers to allow for indoor training during poor weather. She will also need spare tyres.

Earlier this year Grahame Allen, a teacher at Mullion School and member of the Lizard 2000 Club, told his group about Lily’s efforts and they were keen to help.

This has led to a cheque for £500 being presented to Lily at school, bringing her total fundraising so far up to |£2,500 of the £3,500 she needs to raise.

Andrew London, chairman of Lizard 2000, said: “The club have been delighted to help with her fundraising and having met her, it is obvious that Lily is a remarkable and inspirational young person who fully deserves to be supported in her aim to buy the wheelchair.”

The Lizard 2000 Club was founded at the turn of the millennium with the aim of supporting small, worthwhile causes in Helston or on the Lizard Peninsula that do not have the scale or budget to attract donations from wider audiences.

The club supports recreation clubs, schools, organisations, groups and deserving individuals, such as Lily.

Donations are normally given for specific items to promote the community, provide care services or support youth activities.

Over the last 13 years the club has raised in excess of £70,000, all of which has been distributed locally.

Other recent donations have included money for the youth sections of St Keverne Band, Helston Rugby Club and Mullion Golf Club, while community donations include the Fisherman’s Rest in Coverack, Cury Village Hall, Gunwalloe Surf Life Saving Club and the Gulls Theatre Group.

Funds are raised at sponsored events such as the annual Helston Beer Festival, which this year will be held at Helston Football Club from August 1 to 3.

A Golf Charity Day will also take place at Mullion Golf Club on July 12.
