Redruth has lost the battle to host this year's Cornwall Film Festival.

The festival team has announced that the Lighthouse Cinema in Newquay will host the popular event on November 8-10  this year.

While the venue has been hotly contested with both Newquay and Redruth Town Councils bidding to host thenternational film event, organisers say the support and infrastructure offered in Newquay convinced the festival’s trustees to return there for a third year in 2013.

Adding Cornwall Film Festival remains committed to serving the whole of Cornwall and, as well as running year-round screening events across the Duchy, it will be working with Redruth to put on a mini film festival in the run-up to the main event in Newquay.

“We are really pleased to be staying in Newquay for another year with the support of Newquay Town Council and Newquay BID and to have the opportunity to grow our local audience” said festival director, Tiffany Holmes.

"Plans are already afoot for a fantastic programme and we are looking forward to working with the town to ensure that everybody feels welcome and that there is something for everyone at this year’s event.”

Cornwall Film Festival is now calling for entries of Cornish feature films and short films from anywhere in the world in a variety of categories, including a new competition this year sponsored by KEO Digital for online, interactive digital content.

Other Awards this year include the Spider Eye Animation Award with a £500 prize for the best UK animated short film and The Edge Award for the best international experimental film sponsored by Falmouth Art Gallery with a £250 prize for the winning filmmaker.

The earlybird deadline for entering films into the festival is June 25.
